Why do I overthink everything when I know it is not helping?
Because overthinking is not always just a thinking problem. Sometimes it is an attempt to create certainty, prevent rejection, avoid making a mistake or stay ahead of something your mind has learned could hurt.
Overthinking can feel like problem-solving.
Your mind tells you one more pass will fix it.
One more reread.
One more interpretation.
One more possibility.
One more attempt to predict what another person is thinking.
But often there is no new information.
There is simply a nervous system that does not yet feel finished.
What can sit underneath overthinking?
- fear of rejection
- fear of getting something wrong
- difficulty tolerating uncertainty
- perfectionism
- fear of conflict
- needing to anticipate another person's response
- a belief that being prepared will keep you safe
Why does telling myself to stop not work?
Because the thinking may be serving an emotional purpose.
If some part of you believes analysing will prevent pain, telling yourself to stop can feel like asking your mind to drop its protection without giving it another way to feel safe.
A lot of overthinkers are not bad at letting go. They are exceptionally good at scanning for the thing they believe they cannot afford to miss.
Where Root Cause Therapy fits
ARCHĒA uses focused conversation and hypnosis to explore the beliefs and emotional associations underneath recurring patterns.
Instead of treating overthinking only as a habit to suppress, the work asks what the thinking is trying to achieve and where that need may have been learned.
Can this be done online?
Yes. ARCHĒA sessions are conducted privately via Zoom and are available worldwide.
